สังข์ เป็นความเชื่อจากศาสนาพราหมณ์ ด้วยว่าเป็นหนึ่งในสิ่งศักดิ์ 14 อย่าง ที่กำเนิดจากการกวนเฉียรสมุทรของเทวดาและอสูรจึงถือว่าเป็นสิ่งที่มีความมงคลในตัว จึงเหมาะนำมาใช้สื่อความหมายที่ดีในพิธีแต่งงาน
น้ำ ความนิ่ง เป็นหนึ่งเดียว และความเย็นของน้ำ เป็นความหมายมงคลของความมั่นคง ร่มเย็น เป็นปึกแผ่น จึงเป็นดั่งคำอวยพรให้คู่บ่าวสาวได้ครองรัก ครองเรือนกันอย่างยาวนานและมีความใจเย็นเฉกเช่นความเย็นของสายน้ำ ซึ่งน้ำที่ใช้ในการรดน้ำสังข์นั้น เป็นพระพุทธมนต์ ด้วยเหตุที่คนไทยเป็นพุทธศาสนิกชน ดังนั้น น้ำที่เกิดจากการเจริญพระพุทธมนต์จึงถือเป็นสิ่งมงคลยิ่ง และได้นำน้ำพระพุทธมนต์มาบรรจุในหอยสังข์ การรดน้ำสังข์จึงเสมือนเป็นการอวยพรให้คู่บ่าวสาวมีแต่ความเจริญรุ่งเรืองในชีวิตคู่
